Jewelry Care Guide

With the right care, your KZNV jewelry will maintain its beauty for years to come. Follow these guidelines to keep your pieces looking their best and protect your investment.

Care by Material

Gold Jewelry Care

Gold is naturally resistant to tarnish, but daily wear can dull its shine over time.

Cleaning: Soak in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 15–20 minutes. Gently scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush, paying attention to crevices. Rinse under clean water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Storage: Store gold pieces individually in soft pouches or the original KZNV box. Gold can scratch softer metals and gemstones, so keep it separate from other jewelry.

Avoid: Chlorine (swimming pools, hot tubs), harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and direct contact with perfumes or lotions.

Silver Jewelry Care

Sterling silver naturally oxidises and may develop a patina over time. Regular cleaning keeps it bright.

Cleaning: Use a dedicated silver polishing cloth for regular maintenance. For deeper cleaning, soak in warm water with mild soap, gently brush, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Avoid silver dips as they can damage certain finishes.

Preventing Tarnish: Store silver in an airtight bag or container with an anti-tarnish strip. Wearing silver regularly actually helps prevent tarnish, as the natural oils in your skin keep it polished.

Avoid: Rubber, sulphur-containing substances (eggs, wool), chlorine, and prolonged exposure to air and moisture.

Diamond & Gemstone Care

Diamonds are the hardest natural material, but they can still chip if struck at the right angle. Coloured gemstones vary in hardness and require gentler care.

Cleaning: Soak diamond jewelry in warm water with mild soap for 20–30 minutes. Gently brush around the setting with a soft toothbrush to remove oils and dirt. For softer gemstones (opals, pearls, emeralds), use only a damp cloth — never soak.

Inspection: Check prong settings periodically to ensure stones are secure. If a prong feels loose or a stone moves, stop wearing the piece and contact us for repair.

Avoid: Ultrasonic cleaners (unless confirmed safe for your stone), extreme temperature changes, and harsh chemicals.

Enamel Jewelry Care

Enamel is a glass-based coating that adds vibrant colour to jewelry. While durable, it requires careful handling.

Cleaning: Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth. Never soak enamel pieces or use any chemical cleaners, as they can damage the finish.

Handling: Enamel can chip or crack if dropped on hard surfaces. Remove enamel jewelry before physical activities, and avoid pressing or bending the piece.

Storage: Store flat in a padded compartment. Don't stack enamel pieces on top of each other as they can scratch.

General Storage Tips

Proper storage is one of the most important things you can do for your jewelry:

  • Store pieces individually in soft pouches, cloth-lined compartments, or the original KZNV box to prevent scratching
  • Keep away from sunlight — prolonged UV exposure can fade certain gemstones and materials
  • Control humidity — store in a cool, dry place. Silica gel packets help absorb excess moisture
  • Separate metals — different metals can scratch each other. Never store gold and silver together
  • Hang necklaces when possible to prevent tangling and kinking

When to Remove Your Jewelry

To keep your pieces in top condition, remove jewelry before:

  • Swimming or bathing — chlorine, salt water, and soap can damage metals and settings
  • Exercising — sweat accelerates tarnishing and impact can damage pieces
  • Sleeping — pressure and friction during sleep can bend prongs and scratch surfaces
  • Cleaning — household cleaners contain chemicals harmful to all jewelry metals
  • Applying products — put jewelry on last after perfume, sunscreen, and lotions have absorbed

Simple rule: Jewelry should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
